Laptop and external display

Each screen has its own layout, so you can use them differently.

  1. Move your pointer to the external display, open the menu bar panel, and under Windows on this screen pick 4 for a 2×2 grid. (Or press ⌃⌥⌘4 while working there.)
  2. Move to the laptop screen and set it to 1 or 2. A laptop screen is happiest with one big window, or two side by side.

The panel always shows the screen your pointer is on.

  • Drag a window onto the other screen. It joins that screen’s layout as its newest window.
  • Press ⌃⌥ and an arrow toward the other screen. When there’s no window further that way on this screen, the window moves across.
  • ⌘-drag a window onto a window on the other screen to swap them.

If the other screen is already full, the window stays where it was.

When a display goes away, macOS moves its windows to the screen that’s left, and Shoji tiles them there. Plug the display back in and move the windows over again with a drag or a shortcut.
