Multiple displays
Plug in another display and it tiles too. Each screen has its own layout: its own order of windows, its own primary window, its own sizes, and its own window count.
Move a window to another screen
Section titled “Move a window to another screen”- Drag it there. Drop a window on another screen and it joins that screen as its newest window. If that screen is already full, the window goes back.
- ⌘-drag onto a window on the other screen to swap the two windows.
- Use the quick actions. Rest on the grip above the window and click Next screen (or Move to, with three or more screens). See Quick actions.
- Use the keyboard. ⌃⌥ and an arrow swaps with the neighboring window. If there’s no window that way, the window moves to the next screen in that direction, if it has room.
Which screen is “next” follows the arrangement in System Settings → Displays → Arrange.
A different count on each screen
Section titled “A different count on each screen”A small laptop screen might be happiest with two windows while a large monitor holds four. Pick the count, and Grid or Columns, per screen in the menu bar panel (it shows the screen your pointer is on), or press ⌃⌥⌘ with 1 to 4 while working on that screen.
See Laptop and external display for a setup that works well.
